Add the new Facebook “Like” Button Widget on your Blogger Blogs

April 22nd, 2010 13 Comments »

I’ve promised my family and friends that I would create a Blogger counterpart of the plugin I did last night for WordPress, the Facebook “Like” Button Widget Plugin.

Well, I don’t want to keep you from waiting. Here’s how you do it:

1) Login to Blogger (I preferred Blogger Draft in this example)

1

2) Click “Layout” on the blog you want to add the Widget

2

3) Click “Edit HTML”

3

4) Tick the “Expand Widget Templates” checkbox.

4

5) Search for the following code (you can use CTRL+F on your browser)
<div class=’post-outer’>

Once you found it, on the next line you should find this code <b:include data=’post’ name=’post’/>. If you found that, it means you are on the right spot.

5

Copy the code below and paste it right after that <b:include data=’post’ name=’post’/> code (highlighted yellow above).

<script>
fb_like = &quot;http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=<b:if cond=’data:blog.url’><data:post.url/></b:if>&quot;;
document.write(&quot;<iframe scrolling=’no’ frameborder=’0′ allowTransparency=’true’ style=’border:none; margin:10px 0 0 0; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:auto;’ allowtransparency=’true’ src=’&quot;+ fb_like +&quot;’/>&quot;);
</script>

UPDATE: The above code doesn’t seem to work because copying it from here adds some funky characters in the markup. Grab it here instead:
http://snipplr.com/view/32953/facebook-like-button-on-blogger/

Like the highlighted code in the screenshot.

6) Click “Save Template”

6

7) You’re done! Refresh your main blogger blog now and you should be able to see your new Facebook “Like” Button Widget

7

Got it working? Post your URL in the comments below. Cool huh?

It should look like this

Capture

I’ve given the widget a style ID so you can target it in CSS. The id is “facebook_like”.

PHP User Group Philippines (PHPUGPH) together with Microsoft Philippines supporting Filipinos be competitive in the global IT industry landscape

March 22nd, 2010 Comments Off

PHP User Group Philippines (PHPUGPH) together with Microsoft Philippines supporting Filipinos be competitive in the global IT industry landscape.

“Filipino developers don’t have much resources, funds and support to do research and unfortunately, they also don’t have enough training for them to excel even though Filipino developers are one of the most skilled in the global IT industry. The purpose of the summit is not only to share knowledge about PHP alone but also to inform developers of the good programming practices and other tools that would aid them in their work,” said Cherrie Ann Domingo, president of PHP User Group Philippines.

“We’re confident that Filipino developers will thrive in a competitive atmosphere because this is where their creativity and ingenuity will set them apart. By ensuring a robust software economy, we’re also able to support the development of our national economy,” said Microsoft Philippines platform strategy manager Arnie Locsin

Facebook is bigger than Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Turkey combined

facebook

Yes you are reading that right, Facebook is bigger than Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Turkey combined in terms of population. Facebook has a staggering count of 150 million users according to Mark Zuckerberg (Founder, Facebook).

Country population breakdown:

Turkey – 71,892,808
Canada – 33,515,000
Australia – 21,468,700
New Zealand – 4,280,000
———————-
Total 131,246,508*

That, my friend, is really impressive! It makes you wonder how they keep their systems running smoothly, how they scale up rapidly.

Facebook has more than 10,000 servers and leverages mostly open-source software across a distributed architecture, with thousands of MySQL instances. “It’s almost a new challenge every day,”

Jonathan Heiliger (Vice President of Technical Operations, Facebook)
CNET interview

That’s not the only thing, Facebook has more than 10 billion photos! Some additional stats:

  • 2-3 Terabytes of photos are being uploaded to the site daily
  • Over one petabyte of photo storage
  • Serving over 15 billion photo images per day
  • Photo traffic peaks at over 300,000 images served per second

Truth is, impressive is an understatement.
