Force FriendFeed To Refresh Your Tumblr Feed

August 14th, 2008 No Comments »

There are many ways you can refresh your feeds on FriendFeed. One of my favorite is Hao Chen’sFriendFeed Refresh Feeds Button” userscript. However, if you are not a Greasemonkey fan or you simply do not use Firefox, there is a way to refresh a feed on FriendFeed.

I took Tumblr as an example for this post. So here goes… I just posted something at Tumblr and I can’t wait for FriendFeed to schedule the crawling of my feeds. Here are the quick steps to force FriendFeed to refresh it immediately:

1) Assuming you are already logged in, click on the “Share something” button (image)

1

2) Now, click on the “Import your stuff” link. No, you are not going to import your feed again.

2

3) Once you’ve done that, click on the feed that you want to be “refreshed”. In this case, I chose Tumblr. Click on it.

3

4) You will see something like this (below). Now click on the “Refresh feed” link.

4

5) You’re done! You should see the content now on your Friendfeed.

5

It should be noted that you shouldn’t abuse this functionality as it might put some stress on FriendFeed’s servers although I’m pretty sure they can handle it.

By the way, I am using the  “Cleaner FriendFeed” userstyle in case you were wondering why I have a different look and feel. You can also use Cleaner FriendFeed. All you have to do is install the Stylish Firefox plugin then install the Cleaner FriendFeed userstyle.

Anyway, hope this helps someone today.

Wuala, the social online storage launches publicly today

August 14th, 2008 No Comments »

Wuala is a cool backup app which I covered last month and after more than 10 months in invitation-only private beta mode, Wuala is now open to the public.

wuala

Wuala has become a part of my daily tech life as a storage sharing/backup app. It’s very useful and lots of potential. I have given a lot of friends invites to the service and they’ve been impressed with the service too.

Here’s Wuala’s launch press release that was sent to me via email:

WUALA, SOCIAL ONLINE STORAGE, HAS LAUNCHED!

Zurich, Switzerland - August 14, 2008 - Wuala, the free social online storage which allows its users to securely store and share files online, launches today. After a successful closed alpha (invitation-only) with tens of thousands of users storing and sharing millions of files, Wuala is ready to open up to everyone at www.wua.la.

“After more than three years of development and ten months of testing in closed alpha, we are very proud to release Wuala to the public”, says Dominik Grolimund, CEO. “Our alpha users, who are storing and sharing millions of files, have given us tremendous feedback and use Wuala very actively and with great enthusiasm. We believe that Wuala is the right tool for millions of people to securely manage and share their files online.”

Wuala is exceptional in many ways and comes with a number of unique features. In contrast to other online storage solutions, all data stored in Wuala gets encrypted on the user’s computer before it is stored online. The user’s password never leaves his computer. This ensures that only the user and those authorized by the user can see his files and folders. Not even Wuala (Caleido Inc.) as the provider can decrypt the data.

Wuala bridges web and desktop, making it much more convenient than other solutions. Wuala is neither a website, nor a classical desktop application. Being a free application that can be started directly from a website, it allows for typical web use cases such as sending someone a link to a file or using it in places like internet cafes where installing software isn’t allowed. However, as a desktop application, it can perform most tasks locally on your computer, making it much faster than a typical website and allowing for a level of security that wouldn’t be possible if it were a web site.

“Wuala is based on a novel technology that reduces our costs.”, says Luzius Meisser, CTO. “Wuala users can choose to contribute idle resources to Wuala. In addition to servers, Wuala can harness these resources. All data is first encrypted and then split into fragments which are redundantly stored on our servers and in the grid network. This allows us to save costs for downloads - bandwidth, electrical power - and thus to provide a better service for free, with a number of advantages that others just can’t offer: unlimited traffic, no file size limits, fast downloads, etc.”

The closed alpha, which had been released in September 2007, has been very successful and generated a lot of buzz. Tens of thousands of people and thousands of communities around the world are actively sharing millions of files in Wuala. Now that Wuala is available for everyone, it’s ready to scale up to millions of people.

About Wuala
Wuala is a free social online storage which allows its users to securely store, backup, and access files from anywhere and to share files easily with friends, groups, and the world. Tens of thousands of alpha users and thousands of communities around the world are actively sharing millions of files.

Wuala is based on a revolutionary technology that was researched for the most part at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). Users start with 1 GB of storage but can get as much as they want, either by trading idle disk space or by buying additional storage. All files are encrypted on the user’s computer and the user chooses who gets access to which folder. No one else - including Caleido - gets to see the files. Wuala comes as a convenient application for Windows, Mac, and Linux that can also be started directly from within the browser, elegantly bridging web and desktop.

Wuala is developed and run by Caleido Inc., a start-up based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Google Realizes Auto Adding Contacts is a Bad Idea for Gmail

July 13th, 2008 No Comments »

This is great news for all Gmail junkies. I personally dislike that (un)feature. Here’s what Google posted on their blog:

“Google has finally realized that it’s a bad idea to automatically add to the list of Gmail contacts all the people you’ve sent an email. An updated version of Gmail’s contact manager has a separate section for the people you’ve emailed: “suggested contacts”.”

I love this move. Now, I have to give some time cleaning up my Gmail’s contacts because it’s currently marred with emails I don’t personally know.

Love it Gmail team!

All videos on my YouTube can’t be viewed?

July 6th, 2008 No Comments »

This is what I am getting on all videos on YouTube.

youtube

There’s a lot of signs that I am pretty much sure I’m alone in this. I get the “We’re sorry, this video is no longer available” on all videos on Youtube. I also see that there are members watching at the bottom “Also Watching Now (13)”.

I have tried rebooting, deleting the cache, etc. to no avail.

Sigh.

More ways for job seekers to find job openings

July 2nd, 2008 3 Comments »

Post your job once, see them everywhere!

We’ve finally completed our partnership with SimplyHired, Indeed, WowJobs and Kapehan for job aggregation and distribution. SimplyHired is also providing a job search engine for LinkedIn Canada and MySpace UK.

What does this mean to you as an employer?
Aside from our great visibility at search engines (Google, Yahoo! and Live), your job ads will have further exposure thru our job aggregators. This exponentially increases the visibility of your job openings to job seekers who are visiting social networks and other services.

How do I get my job there?
SimplyHired, Indeed and WowJobs only list jobs that have specific locations such as city and state/province. So next time you post a job, make sure you don’t forget to choose a city and state/province. This is however, not applicable for country-wide job postings.

New Employer Dashboard Features

  • View your subscription details
  • View and print your invoices
  • Did your subscription expire? No problem. You can login and re-subscribe inside your dashboard under “Settings > Subscription
