Wuala’s Social Online Storage Is One Cool Backup App

July 16th, 2008 14 Comments »

logo_red Wuala is a new social online storage from Zurich, Switzerland which allows for secure file sharing, online backup storage and remote file access. Unlike traditional online storage systems, Wuala is decentralized and can harness idle resources of participating computers to build a large, secure, and reliable online storage.

A Wuala user starts with 1GB of online storage but can get as much as they want, either by trading idle disk space on their own computer or by buying additional storage. As a new user, I preferred the idle disk space trading. It makes more sense than buying additional storage for now.

All files on Wuala are encrypted on the users’ computer and the user chooses who gets access to which folder. Is it secure? Yes. Wuala employs the 128 bit AES algorithm for encryption and the 2048 bit RSA algorithm for authentication.

Wuala’s desktop application is available on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It can also be directly started from within the browser.

So how do you get it? Wuala is opening up Alpha for everyone starting tomorrow July 17 to 21. You can get access over here.

Here’s an installation walkthrough and some screenshots for the Windows Vista user

wuala1

After installing the desktop app, you will be prompted with the above window. New users will need to click the “Create a new account” link.

wuala2

Use invite code “OpenDays” from July 17 to 21.

wuala3

Complete the above form and note one important thing, you should choose a password that you will remember. Wuala will not provide password recovery.

Here’s their explanation:

“NO PASSWORD RECOVERY! WUALA ENCRYPTS AND DECRYPTS ALL FILES LOCALLY. YOUR PASSWORD NEVER LEAVES YOUR COMPUTER. WE DO NOT KNOW OR STORE YOUR PASSWORD. THIS PROTECTS YOUR PRIVACY, BUT ALSO MEANS THAT, APART FROM SENDING YOU THE HINT YOU CAN SPECIFY ABOVE, WE CANNOT HELP YOU RECOVERING IT IN CASE IT GETS LOST.”

wuala4

Finally, complete the form above.

wuala5

Once you finished with the registration, the desktop app will automatically open up. It should look like the one above.

wuala6

Customize the desktop app to your liking.

wuala7

Start inviting your friends via Facebook, Skype or by simply entering an email address.

wuala8

The above is the world tab. It’s everyone’s shared files. You have the ability to create your own groups where you can share private stuff.

wuala9

Sharing access rights is easy. Right-click a folder and select “Access rights…” Start sharing with your friends. And please do let me know what your thoughts are for this app. I’d love to hear them.

My overall first impression of Wuala is that it’s so easy to use, install, configure and customize. And did I already mention it’s free?

I’m already a user of Dropbox, Mozy and Zecter on my Windows machine. I have Dropbox and Mozy on my Mac. Wuala is definitely a nice, not to mention a very cool addition to my backup and file sharing efforts.

If case you missed their pitch at LIFT Conference here’s the video below

And lastly, Wuala’s presentation at Google Tech Talk (sorry, embedding is disabled).

About the founder of Wuala, Dominik Grolimund
Dominic is 26 years old and studied Computer Science at ETH Zurich. He founded the software company Caleido in 1998, and developed the Caleido Address-Book, a professional contact management software, of which over 35,000 licenses have been sold so far in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Wuala looks like a good buy for a Google social backup service. Not to mention a very good addition to their talent pool.

Woopra is a breath of fresh air for web analytics

June 11th, 2008 4 Comments »

I’m probably one of the first early users to get access to Woopra’s beta couple of months ago. Quite frankly, I didn’t use it. I felt Woopra wasn’t going to be as good as what we currently use (Google Analytics). I even said to myself, “it’s just gonna be another Google Analytics with the same sets of data. What can they probably offer? What else is new?”

woopra

But as soon as I read about Woopra on CenterNetworks this morning, I gave it a whirl. I logged in to my Woopra account, copy/pasted the JS snippet on Mployd. I thought it would take some time for the data to funnel to my dashboard.

And so I tried to download and install the Woopra desktop application. To my surprise, data from the site is already crunching in!

Here’s a screenshot of the Woopra desktop application on my machine after I installed it.

woopra1

woopra2

See that? After 10 mins I’m already getting what I need to know from our visitors. That’s really neat!

And one cool thing about it is that it sits on my desktop/system tray for quick access. Woopra integrated a lot of awesome features into the app aside from analytics. There’s just too much to list them down here.

The Woopra desktop application is currently available in beta to Windows, MacOS, and Linux (note that Java is required to run the app).

We know that Google Analytics dominates the free web analytics space. I’d say Woopra can quickly become #2 with the added innovations to the app.

I’ve tried almost every single free web analytics app out there and Woopra is a breath of fresh air. I simply love it.

IETester: Internet Explorer tester for the web soldier

April 23rd, 2008 No Comments »

Ahh… the realities of a web soldier (designer/programmer/whatever you want to call them) - Internet Explorer. Just like a dream… Sometimes it’s a lot of fun and most of the time a nightmare.

So here’s a new tool to help us through the day aside from biting our fingers and pulling our hairs. IETester.

IETester is a free WebBrowser that allows you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE8 beta 1, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5 on Vista and XP, as well as the installed IE in the same process.

Multiple IE is cool but I didn’t have any luck installing it on Vista (*cough* $uckS *cough*).

Sigh, Internet Explorer. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it. :(

IE7Pro 2.1 is going to bring back some love to Internet Explorer 7 (hopefully)

March 24th, 2008 3 Comments »

ie7pro

We all know that a lot of (if not most) web developers love using Firefox for development. Mainly because of its simplicity, community support and functionality to extend the browser using add-ons.

It is also not a secret that we know that 60% or more* of our web users are still using IE. Most likely, half of those are IE7.

Now, to even the game of preferred development browser (sort of), there is a new update for IE7Pro (version 2.1).

IE7Pro is an app to extend your IE7 installation adding lots of Firefox-like features which you (web developer) need.

ie7pro1

The app might get you to use IE7 more for development. Really. Why? It packs tons of improvements to IE7 and extend it like Firefox.

Some main features includes

  • Enhancement of IE’s Tabbed Browsing Capabilities
  • Super Drag and Drop
  • Mouse Gestures (ala Opera)
  • Crash Recovery (yeah! we need this!)
  • Save Page to Image
  • Quick Proxy Switcher
  • AD Blocker (finally!)
  • Greasy monkey alike User Script
  • Inline Search
  • Spell Check
  • And a lot more…

More screenshots after the jump.

ie7pro3

So, do you want to give IE7 another shot? Or do you want to simply check out what IE7Pro can offer? If your answer is yes to any of those, then get the app directly here.

It might be worth your time.
